Overview

Role Overview

The Tier 3 Network Engineer serves as the highest escalation point within network operations and owns automation, tooling, process governance, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role focuses on reducing manual effort, improving data accuracy, and enhancing operational efficiency through system optimization and automation.

Tier 3 acts as the subject matter expert for advanced Layer 1–3 troubleshooting, tooling strategy, and process design, while providing technical leadership and mentorship to Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams. The role works closely with vendors, engineering, and internal stakeholders to drive scalable solutions and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

    • Design, implement, and maintain automation solutions for provisioning, tracking, reporting, and operational workflows (e.g., Jira-based automation).
    • Analyze end-to-end operational workflows to reduce manual effort, improve accuracy, and increase efficiency through continuous improvement initiatives (CI, A3).
    • Own and enhance internal tools, databases, monitoring platforms, and reporting systems to ensure scalability and reliability.
    • Handle advanced Layer 1–3 escalations and complex troubleshooting scenarios, including greenfield circuit activations.
    • Lead quality assurance reviews and enforce compliance with documentation, data accuracy, and process standards across teams.
    • Act as the subject matter expert for automation, tooling, and process governance within network operations.
    • Collaborate with vendors and internal engineering teams on system enhancements, feature enablement, and tooling improvements.
    • Monitor operational workload, capacity, and overtime trends; recommend and implement optimization strategies.
    • Support and guide Tier 2 activities related to CSP capacity assignments, peering requests, circuit requests, CSP port capacity, and BLPA activation.
    • Lead and support change initiatives related to tooling, automation, and process improvements.
    • Mentor and coach Tier 1 and Tier 2 team members, providing technical guidance and leading training sessions on automation, tooling, and operational best practices.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 4+ years of experience in network operations with strong hands-on expertise across Layer 1–3 troubleshooting.
  • Proven experience in automation, tooling design, and process optimization within an operational environment.
  • Background in ISP or carrier environments, with exposure to provisioning, inventory, and operational support systems.
  • Strong understanding of operational governance, quality assurance, and data integrity principles.
  • Experience leading change management, continuous improvement initiatives, and workflow optimization.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design scalable operational solutions.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including vendor collaboration.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability with experience mentoring and enabling technical teams.
  • Nice to have:
  • CCNP, JNCIS, NRS II, or higher
  • Python, Ansible, or network automation certifications
  • ITIL v3 or ITIL 4 Foundation
  • Six Sigma (Green Belt or higher)
