Overview

We are seeking a Site Planning Engineer to join our Network & Infrastructure Engineering (N&IE) team. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the planning, design, and delivery of physical data center capacity including space, power, and layout optimization – across our global data center footprint.

You will collaborate closely with Engineering Team, Capacity Management, and Data Center Technicians to drive efficient, standardized, and timely deployments that align with both technical and business objectives. This position plays a critical role in advancing Next Generation Network (NGN) initiatives across all three regions, with a primary focus on the AMER data center environment.

Responsibilities

  • Key Responsibilities and Scope of Work

    • Participate in the planning, design, and validation of data center layouts to ensure optimal use of space and power.
    • Handle ticket-based requests in Jira for each IBX site, covering both capacity additions and new power installations (including potential new cage requirements).
    • Review and assess project tickets to determine whether requests involve a capacity add or new rack deployment.
    • Prepare, update, and maintain technical documentation such as cage layouts, rack elevations, and power design drawings.
    • Manage and track internal orders related to space and power requirements.
    • Coordinate with the Engineering Team, Capacity Management and IBX Operations to execute projects according to defined timelines and standards.
    • Collaborate with other team members and other stakeholders for technical validation and training alignment.
    • Ensure tickets are acknowledged and picked up within two business days of receipt.
    • Participate in (2) weekly status meetings to review project updates, dependencies, and next steps.
    • Work primarily on planned projects ensuring proactive planning and accuracy.
    • Deliver precise power and space solutions with a focus on quality and standardization, rather than reporting metrics.
    • Support process improvement initiatives to enhance project efficiency and documentation quality.

    Required Skills

    • Demonstrated hands-on experience with data center physical infrastructure, including racking and stacking of network and server equipment, airflow management, and structured cabling standards.
    • Strong understanding of rack power distribution concepts, including single-phase and three-phase circuits, redundant (A/B) feeds, and load balancing across PDUs.
    • Working knowledge of receptacle types, voltage and current ratings, and their application in high-density environments.
    • Proficient in reading and interpreting power distribution and layout diagrams, integrating power and space considerations into overall rack planning.
    • Experience in data center capacity planning, with the ability to evaluate and forecast space and power requirements to support ongoing and future infrastructure demands.
    • Solid understanding of infrastructure architecture principles, including power draw, thermal load, and physical accessibility impacts on equipment placement.
    • Awareness of regional electrical standards, safety practices, and compliance requirements relevant to data center environments.
    • Familiarity with workflow management tools such as Jira or other ticketing systems.
    • Strong documentation and reporting capabilities, ensuring accuracy and traceability of data center records.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional and global teams.

    Tools Familiarization: Nice to Have

    • Jira (for ticketing and project tracking)
    • AutoCAD, Visio, or Draw.io (for cage and layout design)
    • Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Power BI (for reporting and capacity visualization)
Familiarity with procurement or order tracking systems is an advantage

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Information Technology, Telecommunications, or a related technical discipline (preferred).
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in data center planning, infrastructure design, or technical delivery engineering roles.
  • Professional certifications such as PMP, ITIL, or CDCDP/CDCTP are highly desirable.
